The Last Bus Home

It is Friday evening. Daniel stays late at school to finish his art project. When he gets to the bus stop, his usual bus is already gone.

He calls his mom. “Don’t worry,” she says. “You can take the last bus home.”

Twenty minutes later, the bus arrives. Daniel gets on and sits near the window. There are only a few passengers.

At the next stop, an old man gets on. He looks worried and keeps checking his pockets.

“Is something wrong?” Daniel asks.

“I can’t find my wallet,” the man says. “I think I lost it.”

Daniel looks down and sees a brown wallet under a seat.

“Is this yours?” he asks.

The old man opens it and smiles. “Yes! Thank you so much!”

Then he takes out an old photograph. It shows a little boy standing beside him.

“This is my grandson,” he says quietly. “He lives far away. I don’t see him very often.”

Daniel smiles. “You must miss him.”

“I do,” the man says. “You remind me of him.”

When Daniel gets home, he tells his mom about the old man.

“Sometimes, a small act of kindness can make someone’s day,” Mom says.

Daniel smiles. He knows he will never forget that bus ride.
