IELTS Writing Task 2 — Sample Question & Essay 3

Level: CEFR B2–B2+ | Question Type: Agree or Disagree | Position: Disagree

Some people believe that children should be allowed to make their own decisions about their daily lives, such as what to eat, what to wear and how to spend their free time.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Paragraph 1 — Introduction(引言段)

Some people argue that children should have the freedom to make their own decisions about everyday matters, including food, clothing and free-time activities. I partly agree with this view because making decisions can help children become more independent, but parental guidance is still necessary when their choices may affect their health or safety.

Paragraph 2 — Body Paragraph 1(主体段一)

Allowing children to make everyday decisions can help them develop independence and confidence. When children are given opportunities to choose their clothes or decide how to spend their free time, they learn to think about their preferences and take responsibility for their choices. For example, a child who decides to join a sports club instead of attending music lessons may become more motivated to practise and improve. Making small decisions also teaches children that their choices have consequences. If they spend all their free time playing games, they may discover that they have less time for other activities. These experiences can gradually prepare them to make more important decisions as they grow older.

Paragraph 3 — Body Paragraph 2(主体段二)

However, children should not have complete freedom to make every decision without adult guidance. Younger children may not fully understand the long-term effects of their choices, particularly when health and safety are involved. For instance, if children were allowed to decide what to eat every day, some might choose fast food and sugary snacks instead of balanced meals. This could lead to unhealthy eating habits. Similarly, children may spend too much time using electronic devices if their parents do not establish reasonable limits. Parents should therefore allow children to make simple choices while setting clear rules in areas where children lack the experience to make responsible decisions.

Paragraph 4 — Conclusion(结论段)

In conclusion, I partly agree that children should have greater freedom to make decisions about their daily lives. Although making choices can develop independence and confidence, parents still need to provide guidance and reasonable limits to protect their children’s well-being.

This essay uses a four-paragraph structure to express partial agreement. The writer agrees that children should have some freedom to make everyday decisions but disagrees that they should have complete freedom in every situation.
The first body paragraph explains the benefits of allowing children to make their own choices. The second body paragraph explains why parental guidance is still necessary. Both paragraphs support the position stated in the introduction.

Teaching Focus(教学重点): Partial agreement does not simply mean discussing advantages and disadvantages. Students must explain exactly which part of the statement they agree with and which part they disagree with.
教学重点: 部分同意并不等于简单地讨论优点和缺点。学生必须明确说明自己同意题目观点的哪些方面,以及在哪些方面持保留或反对意见。

例如,本篇文章的核心立场是:

Children should have freedom in simple daily decisions, but parents should set limits when health and safety are involved.
